Thomas Edison
(1847-1931)

The Basics
Born in Ohio in 1847, Thomas Edison would eventually hold 1,093 patents for his inventions (History). Most of his inventions came around after he had started up his company, which would eventually merge into what is known as General Electric Company today (Bio). According to Bio, Edison’s most notable inventions were the telegraph, phonograph, electric light bulb, and the kinetograph. Furthermore, Edison had a rivalry with former employee Nikola Tesla in the energy field. Edison, who was a believer in the direct current system, was battling against Tesla, who thought that the alternative-current system was superior (Bio).
Edison's success was evident right off the bat. His first invention, the stock ticker, was bought off of him for $40,000 (History). So as you can see, Edison contributed to more than just electricity and energy sourcing. For example, the U.S. government offered Edison a position at the head of the Naval Consulting Board because they valued his invention expertise (Bio). Bio also states that during his run as the head of the NCB, Edison worked on multiple projects such as submarine detection equipment and gun detection methods. Edison would only work on defensive weapons and techniques though (Bio).
Impact on the World Today
Edison and the baby version of General Electric Co. made numerous inventions that still contribute to our lives today. The most obvious of them all is the electric light bulb (“Thomas Edison Biography”). This invention was built on to create more efficient sources of energy, but ultimately led to an innovative way to provide light as opposed to using gas lamps (“Thomas Edison”). Edison's rivalry against Tesla also contributed a lot to how the world is today. Without that rivalry, the electricity current systems may not be as efficient as they would have been if it had been a monopoly affair. The competition between the two great inventors drove them to advance their electric technology to be more efficient than the others, and this created a scenario similar to the Arms Race of the Cold War.
