Nikola Tesla

(1856-1943)

Notable Accomplishments

Born in 1856, Nikola Tesla was destined to be a frontrunner in a war of electricity (Nikola Tesla Biography). According to “Nikola Tesla Biography,” Tesla had worked with Edison before parting ways and setting out on his own innovative path. It states that Tesla’s views differed from Edison’s so he eventually left, and this is how the alternating current system caught fire. Teaming up with George Westinghouse, Nikola Tesla received the funding and resources to begin using his brilliant mind to conjure up inventions that would end up being very important ("Nikola Tesla Biography").  Among Tesla's biggest inventions are the Tesla Coil, electric car starters, and completing the development of x-ray technology ("Nikola Tesla Biography" and "Tesla's Impact").  Tesla would have been able to do more damage but Westinghouse cut off his funding because he started viewing Tesla's ideas as unrealistic ("Nikola Tesla Biography").  Without funding Tesla lived the rest of his life scrapping off the rocks.

Impact on our World Today

Most people are completely oblivious to how Tesla has influenced our world today.  In fact, according to “Nikola Tesla Biography,” the alternating-current electrical system is a worldwide standard.  The alternating-current system is by far his greatest invention, but he has many other valuable contributions as well.  "Nikola Tesla Biography" also states that Tesla invented the “Tesla Coil”, which creates high frequency alternating currents, and this technology is still used in radios today. When you are in a car driving to work or school, Tesla’s invention is right there with you. On the note of cars, Tesla also developed the electric car starter (Nightstalker). So instead of using a hand crank to get your engine to start, you are able to just turn the key and the engine hums to life (Nightstalker).  Last but not least, Tesla has benefitted the medical field as well. According to NightStalker’s article, “Tesla’s Impact”, Tesla finished x-ray technology. He used Marie Curie's research to complete the development of modern x-ray technology (BBC).  Hospitals use these everyday, yet the origin of the innovative work is unknown to its clients.  Unfortunately, Tesla ended his life as a homeless recluse, but his legacy deserves to be reflected as that of a king.
